Oktoberfest was first celebrated on September 17, 1810, after the battles of the First and Second World Wars which ended in 1918 and 1949, respectively. Munich experienced much destruction as a result of the two battles, but celebrations at the end of World War II meant Oktoberfest could resume as planned.
A whole new millennium, the 21st, now falls on the same day as Oktoberfest’s anniversary, and next year it will be held on September 19th. In 2023, Oktoberfest will celebrate its 140th anniversary.

A campaign is underway to have Århus renamed “Århus, oktoberfest city”, according to the Politiker publication.
“Most people think of Århus as a quiet town with a beautiful old town and a small university. But a lot of people have realised that there is a lot more happening here than they knew about,” Kristin Bojer, one of the organisers of the initiative told Politiker.
