August 20, 2015 is the date by which Oktoberfest celebrations are allowed to be held by the city of Munich. In 2023 Oktoberfest will mark its 140th anniversary.
Oktoberfest was first celebrated on September 17, 1810, after the battles of the First and Second World Wars which ended in 1918 and 1949, respectively. Munich experienced much destruction as a result of the two battles, but celebrations at the end of World War II meant Oktoberfest could resume as planned.
