POORVA KARMA
Thepurposeforsnehanaas well asswedana is tohelp bringvitiated doshas to an eliminationform. Itis usedas an independent therapyand also aspoorvakarmaof the shodhanchikitsa.
SNEHANA
It is also referred toasOleation Therapy.it is one of themethods that are used prior tobeginning the Panchakarma therapy.As mentioned inCharaka Samhita there are mainlyfour kinds of snehana dravyathat are considered to be the most effective for snehan.
1) Ghee (ghrita)
2) Oil (taila)
3) Fat (vasa)
4) Bonemarrow(majja)
Dadimadighrita, tilataila and bala taila, as well as ashwagandhaGhrita and others are amongthemedicines that are usedinsnehana.
Themethod lubricates the wholebodythrough the application of medicated oil or gheeboth externally and internally.When the medicated oil/ghee has beenused internally, it’s known assnehapanam, it is veryvital to perform this procedure in order to achieve Panchakarma.
CLASSIFICATION OF SNEHANA-
1.) Internal oleation
Itinvolves the consumption ofsnehana dravya , whether in a medicinalorunmedicated form. Itmay or may notbecombinedwith other ayurvedicmedications or food items.The process lubricates thetissuesand different parts ofhuman body.
2) External oleation/massage/abhyanga
Italso includes head massage and body massage, as well asgargle , etc. with medicated oil.
SWEDANA
It is also calledsteam therapy, also known astherapeutic sudation. It isthe second procedure performed beforePanchakarma.The therapy improvesblood circulation and eliminates thetoxins through the skin poresfrom the body.

PRADHAN KARMA OR SHODHAN CHIKITSA
1) VAMANA

HERBS USED AS VAMAK DRAVYA
Vamana therapywhen aggravatedthe kapha dosha that causes disease,orthe dominant kapha doshapitta dosha is responsible fordisease.The therapy has specificwarnings and contraindications.
INDICATIONS-
Thetreatment is appropriate fordiarrhea dysentery, dysentery, feversfrom recent causes cough, cold,urinary tractdisorders and skin diseases, anorexia and respiratory disorders, as well as indigestiongoiter and fibroidetc.
CONTRAINDICATIONS-
Patientswho have kapha dosha lower thannormalshould not undergovammanatreatment.Women who are pregnant, with nothe karma of snehana, strong agni(digestive system) or someone who isunder stress, or hungry youngsters, older people, weak person, enlargedcolon, intestinal parasiteslarger prostate and otherswhen this happens, vamana Karmamust be avoided.
2) VIRECHAN
Virechan (purgation)is the 2nd karmainpanchakarma. It isone of the most commonlyutilized therapies, particularly inillnesses caused bypitta dosha that is aggravated. The pittadosha is expelledwith force via the anal pathway.Doshas are eliminated withless stress and complicationsas compared to vamana karma. Itis also possible to administerinpitta-kapha and vata-pittadoshas where pitta dominates. Thetherapy requires following a particulareating regimens to attain thenormaldiet , and then completethetherapy.
HERBS USED AS VIRECHAK DRAVYA
Virechan drugs include milk, takra, gavakshi, vacha, punarnava, shala, panchmoola, saptala, haritaki, kashmarya, draksha, jyotishmati, vibhitaki, amalaki, abhaya etc.
Based on the medication administeredVirechan can be classified into two types2 types
1) Snigdha virechan- meaning ofsnigdha isoily. It ismentioned in the context of pitta.isassociated withvata dosha.
2.) Rooksha virechan- itcan be identified when pitta has beenassociated with kapha dosha.
INDICATIONS
Virechanis a candidate forgout, piles, constipation as well as jaundice, liver disease ascites, splenomegalydysuria, pain in largein the intestine, diseases of the urogenitalsystem infemales and males and nasal bleeding, etc.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Poor digestive system, diarrhea and dysentery, ulcersin the rectum or emaciatedpersonafter excessiveOleation treatment, injuries etcaresome of the situations wherevirechanis not recommended.
3) BASTI KARMA
Inearlier times,theurinarybladder (basti) wasutilized as anequipmenttothe enema.This is why the name of theprocess is basti karma.
Basti isan exclusive treatmentinayurvedic panchakarma.In this treatment, medicated gheedecoction, oil, etc.are administeredvia the rectalvaginal and urinary routes. Itimproves the immune system and increasesthe general health of a person. Vatadosha is the cause ofevery diseaseand basti karmais the treatmentof choice for pacifyingvata dosha.This is why it is referred toas ‘ardhaChikitsa’ .
