Theentire process of panchakarmaincludes:
1) Poorva karma- snehana and swedana
2.) Pradhan karma- itincludes virechan, vamanabasti, nasya andraktamokshan, thefivekarmasi.e panchakarma.
3) Paschatkarma- it includesdiet post-therapy
POORVA KARMA
Theprincipal goalinsnehanaandswedana is tobring thedoshas with vitiation to a non-existentform. Itis usedas an independent therapyand aspoorvakarmafor the Shodhanchikitsa.
SNEHANA
It is also knownasOleation Therapy.It is aprocedure that is done beforebeginning the Panchakarma therapy.As mentioned inCharaka Samhita there are mainly4 types of snehana dravyathat are considered to be the most effective for snehan.
1) Ghee (ghrita)
2) Oil (taila)
3) Fat (vasa)
4.) BoneMarrow(majja)
DadimadiGhrita, tila Taila or bala tailaGhrita are just a few ofthedrugs usedinthe snehana.
Theprocess lubricates the entirebodyby applying medicated oils/gheeinternally and externally.When the medicated oil/ghee has beenused internally, it’s known asthe snehapanam. It’s animportant for the Panchakarma process.
CLASSIFICATION OF SNEHANA-
1.) Internal oleation-
Itinvolves the consumption ofsnehana dravya , whether in a medicinalornon-medicated version. Itmay or may notbemixedwith other ayurvedicmedications or food items.The technique lubricatestissuesas well as various areas of thehuman body.
2) External oleation/massage/abhyanga
Itincludes head massages the body, massage,gargles, etc. that are medicated with oil.
SWEDANA
It is also calledsteam therapy, also known astherapeutic sudation. It isanother procedure that is performed prior toPanchakarma.The therapy improvesblood circulation and removescontaminants through the pores of the skinand the body.
It is amongthemost effective methods that havebeeninto practice since longback. Itis used as ashaman chikitsa and alsoin poorvakarma to prepare for shodhan Chikitsa. PRADHAN KARMA OR SHODHAN CHIKITSA
1) VAMANA
It is atherapeutically controlledvomiting. Vamana therapyis recommended inkapha doshas.When the dosha crossesthe limit of a certain amount and getsrelocated to a different location, it need tobeeliminatedaway from yourbody. Kaphais locatedin the chestregion henceremoving it throughorallyissimple.
HERBA USED AS VAMAK DRAVYA
Madana phala Panchakarma Treatment in Nashik is themost effectivevamak dravya. Other herbsto use includethe nimba, kutajayashtimadhu vacha, etc.
The therapeutic emesis comes in twotypes:
1.)Gastric emesisstimulates the gastric mucosait then stimulates the vomiting center ofthe brain.
2)Central emesis- itstimulates the medullabrain and the vomiting centerin the brain.
Vomiting is coordinated byMedulla Oblongata, a brain regionandbegins with a lot ofnausea and salivation.

HERBS USED AS VAMAK DRAVYA
Vamana therapywhen an aggravatedkapha dosha causes diseaseorthe dominant kapha doshawith pitta dosha causedisease.Vamana therapy is a treatment with certainlimitations and contraindications.
INDICATIONS-
Thetreatment is appropriate fordiarrhea and dysentery as well as feverfrom recent causes cough, coldurinary tractdisorders Anorexia, skin diseases breathing disorder, ingestion,goiter, fibroidetc.
CONTRAINDICATIONS-
Patientswith a kapha dosha less thannormalshould not be treated withvammanatherapy.Women pregnant, who do not havesnehana karma, agni that is strong(digestive system) and those who arehungry, in stress youngsters, older people and weak people, who have an over-sizedspleen, intestinal parasites,the prostate is enlarged, etc.in such cases vamana karmais not recommended.
2) VIRECHAN
Virechan (purgation)is the second karmaofpanchakarma. It isone of the most commonlyutilized treatments, especially inailments caused by theaggravated pitta dosha. The pittadoesha is removedforcibly through the anal route.Doshas are eliminated withless stress and complicationsthan vamana karma. Itmay also be administeredinpitta-kapha or vata-pittadoshas, where pitta is predominant. Thetherapy requires following a particulareating regimens to attain thenormaldiet and completethetherapy.
HERBS USED AS VIRECHAK DRAVYA
Virechan drugs include milk, takra, gavakshi, vacha, punarnava, shala, panchmoola, saptala, haritaki, kashmarya, draksha, jyotishmati, vibhitaki, amalaki, abhaya etc.
Depending on the medicine used,virechan is of 2 types-
1.) Snigdha virechan- meaning ofthe word “snigdha” isoily. It isa reference to pitta when itisin connection withvata dosha.
2.) Rooksha virechan- itcan be identified when pitta has beenrelated to kapha dosha.
INDICATIONS
Virechanis often associated withgout, piles, constipation and jaundice. It can also be caused by liver disease, splenomegaly, ascites,dysuria, pain in largeintestinal tract, urogenital diseasesystem inmale and female as well as nasal bleeding.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Insufficiency of the digestive system, diarrhea, dysentery, ulcerin the rectum and emaciatedpersonafter excessiveoleation treatment, wounds etcarethe cases wherevirechanshould not be used.
3) BASTI KARMA
Inolden daystheurinarybladder (basti) wasutilized as anequipmenttothe enema.So the name for theprocess is basti karma.
Basti isa particular treatmentwithinayurvedic panchakarma.In this treatment, medicated gheedecoction, oil and other ingredientsare administeredvia rectal,urinary and vaginal route. Itenhances immunity and promotesoverall health of an individual. Vatadosha causesall the diseasesand basti karmais the remedythat is most effective in calmingvata dosha.Hence it is describedas ‘ardhachikitsa’ .

Theadministration of medicine usingmassive or basti(urinary bladder) isknown as basti karma.
A single or a combination ofherbs, decoctions of herbal origin, medicated oil,and other such things, ksheera, mamsarasa, raktaand othermedications in the form ofliquid are applied depending onthehealth condition of theperson.

Jeevaka, rishabhaka, jeevanti, guduchi, gokshura, bala, draksha, shatavari, shatpushpa, yashtimadhu, amalaki, brihati, dadima,pippali, vidanga, adraka, musta, nimbi, kutaja etc are used for basti karma.
